Marketing with Promotional Items

This is important because the person you give the promotional item to, may or may not be the intended audience. Think of it like a greeting card. Would your target be the person buying the card or the recipient of the card, or both? Some target audiences could include your customers or even your employees.
What Are You Trying to Achieve?
When you give out promos, as it is a form a marketing, you should always have a targeted goal. Here are some common reasons businesses might give out promotional items:
- Event Promotion
- Brand Awareness or Recognition
- Employee Retention or Motivation
- Customer Engagement
Whether you are having a health fair, want to showcase your brand to new hires or want to promote your brand to gain new customers, promotional products can achieve your goals.
What Promos Are Best?
Going the Cheap Route
While it may be enticing to hand out a cheap tchotchke, just remember than the perceived value of the item you give is a direct reflection of the business you promote. An item can actually be cheap, without it feeling cheap. Make sure the item you give is not something people will just throw away. Select something that is functional, has a use that people find valuable and is something they will keep out in the open (like on a refrigerator or in a purse).
Making Sure it Lasts
Some promotional items can be used for months or even years. Magnetic clips, lip balm, microfiber cloths are a few good examples of inexpensive promos that can last a long time, have a specific purpose and can have tons of impressions with the user as well as those around them for a long time. The longer an item lasts, the better value for you.
Popular Brands
Chooing a promo with a popular brand (for example: Under Armour or Titleist) is another way to connect your business with an already high-valued brand. For some customers with high-end clientelle, this may be a more appropriate route to take for their giveaways.
